Bridges Between Worlds

Have you ever wondered why dogs only get a small part of our life, yet we’re given all of theirs? Maybe it’s because their purpose burns too brightly for this world to keep for long.

When a dog looks into your eyes, something ancient stirs, something our ancestors never needed science to explain. Now, researchers tell us that in that gaze, their brain releases the same flood of love chemicals a mother feels for her newborn child. And here’s the miracle… it happens in us, too.

No other animal can do this. Not wolves. Not wild foxes. Only dogs because they were never meant to be just pets. They are bridges, soft, breathing bridges, between this world and something higher.

They sense our sickness before a single symptom appears. They wake seconds before our nightmares find us. They press the warm weight of their body against the exact place that hurts, as though they’ve been quietly reading the map of our pain. But it’s more than instinct. It’s devotion, woven into the very fabric of who they are.

I’ve seen it in quiet moments, like when Quinn, my Golden Retriever therapy dog, leans into the side of a stranger in a hospital waiting room. The person doesn’t speak, but Quinn’s tail starts that slow, steady rhythm, and their shoulders relax. There’s an unspoken language at work, one that doesn’t need words or logic.

They don’t just see you, they know you. They see the part of you that hides even from yourself. And they love it. Why would an animal evolve just to love another species so completely? It defies survival’s rules, unless they were sent for something bigger.

Maybe that’s why their lives are shorter. Because they live faster, love harder, and fulfill their purpose long before we’re ready to let them go. And when they leave, they take nothing but the piece of your soul they came to heal. The rest of them, everything they taught, every moment they gave, stays, waiting to walk you home when your own journey ends.
